"I'd like to give you something. Really nothing. Just a body." Christoph Schlingensief or the staging of the autopsy
« Je voudrais vous donner quelque chose. Vraiment rien.
Christoph Schlingensief (1960-2010), the "enfant terrible" of German theatre and cinema, has been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 47. From then on, he thought of himself as an author through death, notably in two productions: A Church of Fear Within the Stranger in Me - A Fluxus Oratorio and Via Intolleranza II. As he has always been obsessed with staging the human body, it is in relation to autopsy, from a purely biological point of view and through moral introspection, that he himself engages in a ceremony around his own disappearance. The interplay between the absence and presence of the performer within the performance and within a new world is at the heart of both works, as the Eucharist scene in Church of Fear particularly illustrates.
